The Union Mine High School music program is led by Matthew Lane. Taking over as director in August of 2017, he has brought his love of music, energy, community involvement, and fun to the program. He currently directs 5 entities of this music department (Jazz Band, Marching Band, Beginning and Acappella Choir, Concert Band, and Color Guard) and is also growing his program by teaching Music Theory and Beginning Instruments. He is also directing live orchestra pits for our UMHS Drama musical productions and taking the music students out into the community to perform at various functions.
MARCHING BAND & Color Guard
The UMHS Marching Band & Color Guard is currently made up of a group of 51 dedicated students who love music and competition. These students attend band camp, practice everyday during class, Wednesday nights, and some Saturdays as they memorize their music, learn their placement in field shows, and choreograph their movements. The UMHS Marching Band & Color Guard also perform at competitions as well as during Union Mine's home football games. During the Fall of 2017, the UMHS Marching Band & Color Guard was under the direction of our Drum Major EJ Charles (who spent the summer of 2017, and will be again in 2018, marching with the "Boston Crusaders"). This 2017 Fall season our Marching Band, Color Guard, and Drum Major won many awards at their competitions. Our band placed 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th in our tough divisions; our color guard placed 2nd in our division; and our drum major placed 1st and 2nd in our division plus he won 1st (he won this award twice), 2nd, and 5th place over all in Field Conducting. The UMHS Marching Band & Color Guard is a great place to learn leadership skills, develop musically, and establish friendships and memories.
The UMHS Jazz Band is a band that students audition for. This band is made up of many talented and dedicated musicians that meet every school day during zero period (6:50am) to learn the salty swing of Jazz. They learn the art of improve and each student has the opportunity, and are encouraged, to solo. This is a band that is a year long class. These students compete (this fall they placed 4th in their 1st competition and 3rd place in their 2nd competition) as well as play publicly at various school and community functions and fundraisers. They will also be performing at various festivals this spring where they will receive scores and feedback from judges. The UMHS Jazz Band will be performing with Metro Swing at the 1st Annual Diamondback Spring Swing dinner/dance fundraiser on April 14, 2018.
Choir - General Chorus & A cappella Choir
Our UMHS Choir program is made up of two parts, General Chorus (which is a Fall class) and A cappella Choir (which is a Spring class). This program is for those hard working students that love music and love to make music with their vocal cords. The General Chorus is a class were students are taught how to read music and apply what is on paper to their vocal cords. The General Chorus performs in the fall for their school, family, friends, and community. They also perform at various community events and fundraisers. The A cappella Choir performs in the spring at various festivals where they will receive scores and feedback from judges, as well as school functions and concerts. These students are hardworking, dedicated, and make beautiful music together.
Our UMHS Concert Band starts in the Spring term of the school year and is currently underway. This program is for those who love music and are looking to further their musical career with challenging pieces of music. Our Concert Band performs in many festivals where they will be critiqued and receive scores from judges. Our band is made up of woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings.
